Well Newsletter: February 2025

Writer: Deepa TharmarajDeepa Tharmaraj

A few years ago, I found myself in an end-of-year assessment review with my manager. As we sat down, I felt a mix of anticipation and nervousness. My manager began by commending my technical skills, highlighting the projects I had successfully completed and the innovative solutions I had brought to the team. I felt a sense of pride as he acknowledged my hard work and dedication.

However, the conversation took an unexpected turn. My manager, with a thoughtful expression, pointed out that while I was technically proficient, there was an area that needed improvement. He mentioned that although I considered myself friendly and approachable, I was not effectively building relationships with stakeholders and senior leaders. I was fulfilling my responsibilities and completing tasks, but I was not fostering long-term connections.

His feedback hit me like a bolt of lightning. I had always believed that delivering high-quality work was enough to gain recognition and respect. The idea of engaging with senior leaders made me uncomfortable, and I had avoided it, thinking my work would speak for itself. But my manager's words made me realize that building relationships was just as important as technical expertise.

He was spot on with his feedback. I reflected on my interactions and realized that I had been missing opportunities to connect with key individuals. I had been so focused on my tasks that I had overlooked the importance of sustaining relationships. It was a wake-up call that changed my perspective.

From that day forward, I made a conscious effort to step out of my comfort zone. I started engaging more with stakeholders and senior leaders, seeking their input and building rapport. It wasn't easy at first, but over time, I became more comfortable and confident in these interactions. I learned that building relationships was not just about networking but about creating a supportive and collaborative environment. It was an opportunity to give from a godly heart.

In the New Testament, there are numerous examples highlighting the importance of building authentic relationships. One such instance is when Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well in a little town called Sychar (Samaria). He deliberately engaged her in conversation, asking questions and showing genuine interest in her life, before He offered her the ‘living water’ and revealed to her that He was the Messiah. Their dialogue not only led to her salvation, but the salvation of the people in Sychar. Jesus was relational; beginning from the forming of his twelve disciples and His journey on the earth is littered with examples of relational authority, which helps with building communities and service to others. You can read this story in John 4.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson: excellence in work is important, but so is the ability to connect with others. It helped me grow both professionally and personally, and I am grateful for the feedback that pushed me to become a more well-rounded individual.  Understanding the power of community has led me to build Well, to create a sense of belonging for women leaders of faith. Wise Well Woman Summit is a day of connecting with women with a desire to see the convergence of faith, work and leadership.

The Well Board of Advisors and I are hosting the 2nd Wise Well Woman Summit in 2025. This event will offer valuable teachings and practical strategies for seasoned and emerging leaders. Last year's summit was transformative, and we look forward to witnessing more inspiring changes this year.
